Santiago Speaks to UW-Stout Multicultural Student Group
Design school dragging? Struggling to break into the industry? Chandler’s own Luis Santiago shares three tips for success.
Luis recently spoke to a group of multicultural students at his Alma Mater, UW Stout, where he shared his experiences as a design student and now professional. Luis offered advice on persevering in the design profession, noting that having a strong passion for design was a large motivator. He also detailed his path to becoming the designer he is today, noting that the journey wasn’t a linear one, and encouraged students to continuously pursue their creative passions.
Luis’ Tips for Students and Up-and-Coming Professionals:
- Get Back to Basics– “Practice makes perfect. Fundamentals may seem uninteresting or redundant at times but are the most critical in developing a strong design foundation.”
- Make Mistakes– “Embrace the fact that you will make mistakes! Accepting this fact allows you to be more creative, try new things, and learn from what hasn’t worked.”
- Take Chances– “Networking and asking for informational interviews are great ways to get yourself in front of professionals that can critique your work and possibly help you get hired.”
To Give Is To Receive
Giving back and speaking to student groups is not new for Luis. He views these opportunities as a chance to help the community nurture their passions, whatever they may be. Additionally, he believes the events support his ability to speak about his methods and work.
It is a lesson for us all: to give back is to receive! Chandler is proud to have a team engaging in community involvement and designer development.
