SONY LEAP STORE

Sony approached Chandler to engineer, manufacture, install, and manage two mock-up stores and one final pilot store within a ten week timeline. Sony was looking for a partner to help redefine their retail stores. Klein Dytham architecture (KDa) provided Chandler with rough architectural dimensions and concepts. For the project, Chandler created a complete modular fixture package of over 65 pieces and over a dozen different fixture designs.

Sony wanted the store design to entice customers to experience and enjoy the Sony brand. The bright open space displays products on tables instead of behind locked display cases so the customers could personally interact with them.

Highlights from this store include: fixtures wrapped in Corian with operable door fronts that have a push-to-open and soft-close feature; a wall system that accommodated TV mounts and had removable panels for modifying based on season. A freestanding display wall that’s suspended from a concealed overhead rolling track.

Sony went onto build 9 additional Sony Leap stores using this store design. From this project, Chandler and Sony have developed a strong partnership; resulting in multiple retail projects such as the Sony Retail Experience Pads within 350 Best Buy locations.

Sony wanted to be able to control the content on all the televisions in the store as well as have the flexibility to move them as needed. To address these goals, Chandler designed a structural backbone to allow flexible TV placement and allow the televisions to be connected to a central hub. Each panel of the wall system was actually a fabric-wrapped acoustic panel with a magnetic backing so it could be removable and re-positioned. Power was completely integrated into the structure and structural brackets were designed to go behind the fabric panels so that TVs could be quickly and easily relocated.

With this technology integration, the Sony staff was able to control the content on all the televisions in the store and re-position them as needed. Keep on scrolling!

FIXTURE PACKAGE - DESIGNED-ENGINEERED AND BUILT

Within the store were multiple fixtures wrapped in Corian with operable door fronts that had a push-to-open and soft-close feature. The Corian cladded fixture package featured 65 unique designs built to accommodate Sony’s wide variety of merchandise. Each counter featured a customized keyless entry system which permitted product to be stored on the sales floor without compromising security. The center wall structures are set on a moveable track system and feature both fabric and digital messaging. The walls can be moved the entire length of the store and dedicated power integration ensures there is no loss of power during movement. Casters were incorporated into the free-standing displays to allow for more modularity and flexibility.

PROTOTYPE AND ROLL-OUT

Sections of the store were split into zones to allow Chandler teams to concurrently work and meet the aggressive timetable. Separating the stores into areas allowed development of the content walls, the multiple fixtures and the floating accessory walls to all be designed concurrently with the goal of a full prototype mock up at the same time.

Chandler in-house design, engineering and fabrication teams worked together to provide a mini-mock up in the Chandler warehouse in 4 weeks and then a full scale mock up at the store. This work was done to meet the aggressive 10-week timeline. Sony went on to build additional full scale stores and refresh existing stores with sections of the modular displays.
